Your Accountancy Reset

Changing Accountant Should Give You More Clarity - Not More Uncertainty

A structured way for owner-managed businesses to leave a frustrating accountancy relationship behind and start the new one knowing where they stand.

If you are unhappy with your accountant, changing should feel like progress.

But when you are already busy, the thought of moving records, explaining everything again and wondering whether the next accountant will eventually become just like the last one can make it easier to stay where you are.

That is why every client who switches to us goes through our structured Accountancy Reset.

It is designed to manage the handover, understand what we have inherited and give you a clear starting position before the new relationship moves forward.

If You Are Always Chasing, Something Is Already Wrong

Most business owners do not decide to change accountant because of one small irritation.

It is usually the accumulation of things.

  • Questions take too long to answer.
  • You are not sure what is happening unless you ask.
  • Tax bills feel like they arrive too late.
  • Advice comes after the decision rather than before it.
  • You do not feel properly informed.
  • You have lost confidence that someone is actively looking after the financial side of the business.

And even when the relationship is no longer working, changing can still feel like a hassle.

You may worry about disruption, missing information, something being overlooked during the move – or simply ending up with the same experience again under a different name.

The Accountancy Reset exists to deal with that uncertainty.

We Do More Than Move Your Records

A normal accountant transfer can be treated as an administrative exercise: obtain the records, update the systems and carry on.

We think a switch should achieve more than that.

The Accountancy Reset is our standard onboarding process for every client changing from another accountant.

Its purpose is to establish:

  • what has already been completed;
  • what remains outstanding;
  • where your current accounts and tax position stands;
  • whether anything we inherit needs attention;
  • how the new relationship will work going forward.

So instead of simply hearing, “The transfer is complete”, you should be able to say:

“I know where I stand now.”

One Person Owns The Switch From Start To Finish

You should not have to work out who is responsible for your transfer.

A dedicated Reset owner manages the onboarding process from beginning to end.

Your ongoing primary contact is introduced at the start, so you know who will be looking after you long term. But responsibility for completing the Reset remains with the Reset owner until the process is formally finished.

That gives you continuity without allowing the handover itself to fall between different people.

How The Accountancy Reset Works

We coordinate the professional handover and obtain the records and information needed to take over your accountancy and tax affairs.

We will tell you clearly if there is anything we need from you to keep the process moving.

We review what we have inherited and establish what work has already been completed, what is currently open and what still needs to happen.

We bring together the available accounting and tax information so we can understand your current position rather than simply assuming everything transferred across is complete and understood.

We look for outstanding matters, inconsistencies, unusual items or other areas that deserve attention.

We do not begin from the assumption that your previous accountant did a bad job. The purpose is to understand the position objectively.

If something we inherit suggests an earlier period may need further investigation, we can carry out a risk-based look-back.

If that develops into substantial additional work outside the normal Reset, we explain what we recommend, why, the likely benefit or risk, the timeframe and the price before anything chargeable begins.

We talk you through the important findings in straightforward language, including anything that needs to be corrected, monitored or dealt with next.

We make sure the new working relationship starts with clear expectations around communication, responsibilities, information, deadlines, service scope and fees.

Once the Reset is complete, you move into our normal Certainty By Design way of working with a clearer understanding of where things stand and what happens next.

Your 90-Day Reset Report

At the end of the process, every switching client receives a 90-Day Reset Report.

It is designed to give you a simple, understandable record of the starting position and what has happened during the transfer.

The report covers:

What We Inherited
The position, information and open matters that came across when we took over.

What We Found
Anything that needed explanation, attention or further action.

What We Changed
Corrections, improvements or actions completed as part of the Reset.

What Is Already Fine
Where something is already in order, we say so. The Reset is not an exercise in finding faults for the sake of it.

What Happens Next
The remaining actions, upcoming dates and what you should expect from the relationship going forward.

What If The Transfer Takes Longer Than 90 Days?

Some parts of an accountant transfer can depend on information from your previous accountant, HMRC or another third party.

If something outside our control prevents us from finalising the Reset within 90 days, we do not simply leave the process open-ended.

You receive an Interim Reset Update at 90 days explaining:

  • what has been completed;
  • what we have found so far;
  • what remains outstanding;
  • what or who we are waiting for;
  • what happens next.

The final Reset Report follows once the remaining matters have been resolved.

The principle is simple: even when we are waiting on someone else, you should still know where the process stands.

What Happens After The Reset?

The Accountancy Reset is the beginning of the relationship, not a one-off exercise.

Once it is complete, you are looked after through our Certainty By Design approach.

That means clear processes around the parts of accountancy that can otherwise create unnecessary uncertainty, including:

• a named primary contact and named backup;
• a substantive response to normal enquiries within 24 working hours;
• a personalised Financial Control Calendar;
• two proactive reviews each year;
• tax visibility before your year end;
• written action plans and follow-up;
• no unapproved additional fees;
• a Service Recovery Guarantee.

Common Concerns About Changing Accountant

“Will changing be a lot of work for me?”

We manage the professional handover and coordinate the transfer process. There may be information or authority we need from you at different stages, but we make those requests clear and tell you when we need them.

“What if my previous accountant has done everything properly?”

That is absolutely fine.
The Reset is not based on the assumption that something must be wrong. One of the headings in your report is deliberately What Is Already Fine. The purpose is clarity, not criticism.

“What if you find a problem?”

We explain what we have found, why it matters and what we recommend doing about it.
If fixing or investigating it requires substantial work outside the agreed service, our No-Unapproved-Fee Rule applies before the additional work begins.

“What if I am worried the new accountant will eventually be just like the old one?”

That is exactly why we have defined how the ongoing relationship should work.
Certainty By Design gives you clear expectations around communication, reviews, tax visibility, follow-up and fees rather than asking you to rely only on a promise that we are ‘proactive’.

“Do I need to wait until my year end to change?”

Not necessarily. The right timing depends on your circumstances and what is currently in progress.
If you are considering a move, we can talk through the position first and explain the practical implications before you decide.

You Do Not Have To Stay With An Accountant You Have Lost Confidence In

If you are tired of chasing, unclear about where things stand or simply feel the relationship is no longer giving your business what it needs, changing does not have to mean jumping from one unknown into another.

Start with a straightforward conversation.

Tell us what is frustrating you, what you want to be different and anything you are concerned about with the switch.

We will talk through the position, explain how the Accountancy Reset would work in your circumstances and help you decide whether we are the right fit.

No pressure. No criticism of your existing accountant.

Just a clear conversation about what you need from the relationship.
